Next year’s trend forecast is here and brings us another year of successful creative experiments. If we recall what marked 2022 in the field of graphic design, then it is most certainly the return of optimism and colors.
Optimism remains in the upcoming year, but we can still call it moderate considering the recession, inflation, and the war, which has a great impact on all areas. Designers have an answer to all these circumstances, but they react very differently. Some are inspired by the unexplored, some by rebellion, while for some nature is still the most inspiring.
If your brand is not inclined to follow the news and likes to stick to timeless trends, then our blog about three such trends is the right one for you. However, if you like to keep track of what’s new that may appear in the upcoming year and possibly apply some of it to your brand in cooperation with us, then continue reading this blog.
In the context of design, mysticism refers to elements that trace their origins to astrology and divination. Designers find inspiration in various places, and items that could be the main inspiration for this trend are tarot cards and talismans. The trend relies on very popular symbolism, which includes the signs of the zodiac, the eye of Fatima, and other similar elements, then the lotus flower, and finally sacred geometric shapes.
This mystical, occult aesthetic has been known for centuries and from time to time returns to the design focus. And why is that so? From a visual point of view, such visuals are created with the help of thin lines and velvety tones, using the sun, moon, and stars to achieve a calming effect. You don’t need to know tarot cards to love this trend and to feel the calming effect of the mystical design.
2.Punk is not dead
Punk is a rebellious, artistic direction and subculture, which found its inspiration in the second decade of the last century and the Dadaist movement. Ever since it appeared, it has never really ceased to exist but has only been transforming through different art forms. However, in 2023 we will witness the reawakening of this direction. Probably the reason for this is the general political atmosphere in the world.
Aesthetically speaking, we will be able to recognize punk through the use of different techniques. In collages, but also different fonts that will not match each other, just like clips from various visuals. All in all, we can’t expect neatness, because punk is not all about that. Punk is controlled chaos, but so is life, so this representation of reality appeals to customers. Additionally, they will identify with visually energetic collages from which we can almost hear the frustration and feel a strong graphic moment that sends a strong message. This is exactly what is needed at this moment in which rebellion is looming on every horizon.
Nature is a frequent motif in the visuals created by graphic designers. Whether they use leaves of trees and flowers or fruits and vegetables in their works, the compositions they create will be as full of life and vivid as forests and fields. But in 2023, patterns inspired by nature take on a less polished/perfect look, and will instead be recognizable by rough textures and consistent color palettes.
This trend in 2023 takes an unexpected twist by reinterpreting familiar themes from nature in a different way, creating colorful and eye-catching drawings. This trend refuses to bow to the geometric precision imposed by various tools for graphic designers. What makes it interesting is precisely the imperfection that comes from hand-drawn elements and the most authentic representation of plants. And while some customers like the sharp edges, and precise, almost minimalistic look of the visuals, others like the imperfect shapes, a multitude of colors, and energy that such visuals bring.
The more time we spend online versus offline, the less clear the boundaries between the two become. This is especially the case with generation Z, which has high expectations when it comes to transferring online aesthetics to offline. And in 2023, graphic designers are completely breaking those boundaries by creating digital illustrations on photos taken in real-time. We’re sure this trend draws inspiration from the popular TikTok collages, which zoomers adore.
And while merging the artificial and the real seems like an impossible mission to some, you should know that this trend relies much more on enjoyment and fun. The visuals are rich with bright colors and patterns on the faces of the photographed persons, reminiscent of drawing caricatures or comics. These visuals show the world as we sometimes see it or want it to be – a place where we encounter miracles and where magic is made.
Gradients or color transitions have been popular in design circles for some time. Although they have been present for a few years, it seems that they will be around for a while, because every year designers manage to incorporate them into their visuals in a new and innovative way. 2023 will not be an exception either, except that in the following year, the gradients will take on abstract shapes and mix, i.e., merge with the elements of unclear boundaries and the background.
Long forms of abstract gradients create a feeling of weightlessness, which is further highlighted by bright colors. They, in combination with these shapes, have a spilling effect and bring the appearance of multi-colored sand that almost dissipates in an instant. Due to the fact that gradients have soft lines and have a fluidity effect, they naturally create a sense of calm in the viewer. That is probably why they are so popular because they can be applied in many industries.
